Graphic Designer Resume: Examples (2026)

Graphic designer resume example with a portfolio link, selected projects, summaries, bullets, skills and Adobe certification, plus a free template.

Template:

An in-house graphic designer at a regional grocery co-op with four years of experience applying for a graphic designer job at a branding agency.

Why this resume works

  • The portfolio link sits in the header next to the email and phone, so the reader can open the work before reaching the first bullet.
  • Two selected projects (a 140-product private label packaging line and a store sign system for 11 stores) point to the case studies the agency will want to see first.
  • Bullets show volume and range with numbers, such as 30 to 40 print and digital pieces a month, while the resume itself stays plain, single column and easy for hiring software to read.

A graphic designer is hired on the portfolio, but the resume decides whether anyone opens it. A creative director or design manager reads your resume to learn three things quickly: what kind of design you do (brand, packaging, print, digital, motion), who you have done it for, and whether you can deliver finished, print-ready or web-ready files on a deadline. Then they click your portfolio link. If the link is missing or buried, many will not go looking for it.

This guide shows how to write a graphic designer resume that works with your portfolio rather than trying to replace it, how to show design work on a simple one-page resume, and a full example for an in-house designer applying to a branding agency. You also get summaries for three levels, bullets, the skills and software postings ask for, and the certifications that are real and worth listing.

How to write a graphic designer resume

1

Put your portfolio link in the header

Next to your email and phone, add one short portfolio address: your own site, an Adobe Portfolio page or a Behance profile. Use a link that opens straight to your best work, not a login page or a cloud folder. Check that it opens on a phone as well as a laptop, since you cannot know where the reviewer will click it.

2

Name your design specialty in the headline

Graphic Designer, Brand and Packaging or Graphic Designer, Digital and Social tells the reader where you fit. Match the words to the posting. If the job is mostly marketing production, say so; if it is identity work, lead with brand.

3

Show work on the resume with a short selected projects section

You cannot paste images into a resume that hiring software must read, and you should not try. Instead, list 2 or 3 projects by name with one sentence each: what it was, the scale and your role. Give each the same name it has in your portfolio so the reader can find the matching case study.

4

Write bullets with volume, range and results

Designers often write Created marketing materials. Say what and how much: pieces per month, number of products, stores, pages or campaigns. Where you can, add what happened after: sales, sign-ups, hours saved, a client who came back. And mention press-ready files or accessibility checks, which show you finish the job.

5

List software by name, and do not rate yourself

Postings name tools: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma, After Effects, Canva. List the ones you use. Skip skill bars, stars and percentages; they cannot be read by hiring software and a reviewer has no way to know what 80 percent of Photoshop means.

6

Keep the resume itself clean and single column

Your design skill shows in the portfolio. The resume should be simple: one column, clear headings, one accent color at most, real text rather than text in images. Add your degree or certificate program, any Adobe certification, and keep it to one page.

Graphic designer resume bullet examples

Borrow the structure: what you designed, how much or how many, and what happened. Use your own work and numbers.

  • Designed a new visual identity for a 60-year-old credit union, including logo, color palette, type system and a 40-page brand guide.
  • Produced 200+ paid social ad sizes a quarter from master designs, keeping every version within the brand guide.
  • Redesigned the monthly member magazine, cutting layout time from 5 days to 3 with a new InDesign template and paragraph styles.
  • Created packaging for 18 new products in one season, working with the printer on color approval and dielines.
  • Built a Figma component library for email and web banners that 6 marketers now use to make routine graphics.
  • Designed trade show booth graphics, banners and handouts for 4 events a year on a $15,000 budget.
  • Illustrated 12 infographics for a hospital's annual report, turning data tables into readable charts.
  • Retouched and color corrected 500+ product photos for an online store relaunch.
  • Checked 100 percent of outgoing files for accessibility basics (contrast, alt text notes, readable type sizes) before handoff.
  • Pitched 3 concept directions for a restaurant rebrand; the client chose one and kept the agency for a second year.
  • Mentored 2 design interns, reviewing their files and teaching prepress checks.

Certifications for graphic designers

No license is required to work as a graphic designer, and your portfolio matters far more than any certificate. The one widely recognized software certification is Adobe's, which can help early in your career or when a posting names Adobe tools:

  • Adobe Certified Professional in Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop, with exams listed on Adobe's certification site and delivered by Certiport.
  • A degree or certificate program in graphic design, listed under education. Most postings ask for a bachelor's degree or equal experience, and an equivalent portfolio often counts.
  • Short courses in typography, user experience or motion design, only if the job includes that work. List a course as a course, not as a certification, unless it ended in an exam from the body that issues it.

The example, line by line

The example is for Marcus, an in-house designer at a grocery co-op in Minneapolis who wants to move to a branding agency. Here is what each part does.

Header: name, headline Graphic Designer, Brand and Packaging, contact details and a short portfolio address. The headline names the two kinds of work the agency posting asks for.

Summary: 4 years, an 11-store co-op and the full range of work (packaging, signs, ads, social, print) in the first sentence. The second names his biggest project, the 140-product private label line. The third lists his tools and the job he wants.

Experience: four bullets. Volume (30 to 40 pieces a month), a packaging result (co-op brand sales up 12 percent), a system that saves 20 hours a month, and clean files with 3 printers. The junior job stays as one line because 25+ clients a month shows speed and range.

Projects: the two case studies an agency will open first, named exactly as they are in his portfolio, with the scale: 6 categories, 11 stores.

Education, certification and skills: his BFA, the Adobe Illustrator certification, and eight skills in posting words.

Mistakes that sink graphic designer resumes

  • No portfolio link, or a broken one. Test the link before every application. A password page or an expired file share ends the review.
  • An over-designed resume. Two columns, icons, text inside shapes and skill bars look good as an image but can come out scrambled in hiring software. Let the portfolio carry the style.
  • Software as the whole story. Knowing Photoshop is expected. Show what you made with it and what it did.
  • Every project you ever did. Pick 2 or 3 that match the job. An agency doing packaging wants packaging first.
  • Hiding the in-house or agency setting. They are different ways to work: one brand in depth, or many clients fast. Say which you know.
  • Listing student work as if it were client work. Class and self-started projects are welcome; just label them as such.

Frequently asked questions

What should a graphic designer put on a resume?

A headline with your specialty, contact details with a portfolio link, a short summary, each job with bullets that show volume and results, 2 or 3 selected projects, education, any Adobe certification, and the software the posting names.

Where does the portfolio link go on a graphic design resume?

In the header, with your email and phone. Use a short address that opens straight to your work. You can repeat it in your cover letter or application form.

How do I show my design work on a one-page resume?

Add a short selected projects section: the project name, one line on what it was and its scale, and your role. Use the same names as your portfolio so the reader can find each case study.

Should a graphic designer resume be creative?

Only a little. Use good type, spacing and perhaps one accent color, but keep it single column with real text. Hiring software cannot read text in images or columns reliably.

Do graphic designers need a degree?

Most postings ask for a bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field, and many accept equal experience with a strong portfolio. List your degree or certificate program either way.

Is Adobe certification worth it for graphic designers?

It can help early in your career or when a posting asks for proof of Adobe skills. It will not replace a portfolio. List it with the app name, such as Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe Illustrator.

How many projects should my portfolio have?

Quality beats quantity. Six to ten strong pieces or three to five full case studies is common, chosen to match the jobs you want.

Should I include freelance design work?

Yes. List it as a job, such as Freelance Graphic Designer, with dates, the kinds of clients and bullets with numbers. Name clients only if you have permission.

What skills should I put on a graphic designer resume?

Your design specialties (brand, packaging, layout, digital ads), production skills such as prepress and color, and the tools: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Figma and any motion software.

How long should a graphic designer resume be?

One page for almost everyone. Senior designers with many roles can go to two, but the portfolio holds the detail.
