Human Resources Resume: Examples (2026)

Human resources resume example for HR generalists, with summaries, bullets, skills and SHRM and HRCI certifications, official pay figures and a free template.

Template:

The only HR generalist at a 450-employee distribution company, applying for a senior HR generalist job at a manufacturer.

Why this resume works

  • The first bullet sets the scope in one line: 450 employees, 3 warehouses and a corporate office, handled by one generalist, which tells the reader how much she already carries alone.
  • The strongest result is a business number, not an HR task: first-year turnover of warehouse associates cut from 58 to 39 percent, which any operations leader will understand.
  • Compliance is shown with a real audit (450 Form I-9 records checked, 36 corrected), because a hiring manager in manufacturing worries about exactly that kind of exposure.

Human resources is the job of looking after a company's people and its legal obligations at the same time. An HR resume is read by an HR director or a busy operations leader who wants to know whether you can calm a difficult employee situation, keep the company out of trouble on paperwork and leave, run benefits enrollment without errors, and make managers' lives easier. Warm words about loving people do not answer that. Numbers about employees supported, turnover, investigations and audits do.

This page is about generalist HR work: employee relations, onboarding, benefits, leave, policies, compliance and HR data. It covers what goes on an HR resume, the order that works, summary and bullet examples from coordinator to HR manager, the skills and systems postings ask for, the SHRM and HRCI certifications and what they require, and a full example for an HR generalist moving up. If your work is mostly filling open jobs, the recruiter resume example is built for that.

How to write a human resources resume

1

Use a headline that names your HR level and focus

HR titles vary widely: coordinator, assistant, generalist, business partner, specialist in benefits or employee relations, manager. Put the one that matches the posting in your headline, with your certification if you hold one, for example HR Generalist, SHRM-CP. It tells the reader at once which level you are applying at.

2

State how many employees you support

The size of the population is the single most useful fact on an HR resume. Supporting 80 employees in one office and 450 across several sites are different jobs. Give the headcount, the number of locations, the type of workforce (hourly, clinical, union, remote) and whether you worked alone or on a team.

3

Show results in the language of the business

HR work pays off in turnover, time to fill, cost, risk and satisfaction. Write bullets that end with those: turnover down, complaints resolved, audits passed, enrollment errors avoided, managers trained. Start each bullet with a verb and include a number.

4

Name the systems and the rules you work with

Postings name the HR system (Workday, ADP, UKG, Paycom, BambooHR) and the compliance areas (Form I-9, leave, equal employment opportunity, wage and hour). Use the exact names. It helps the hiring software rank you and tells the reader you will not need training.

5

Put certifications near the top

HR has no license, so a certification from SHRM or HRCI is the main outside proof of your knowledge, and many generalist and manager postings ask for one. List it in its own section with the issuing body and year, and in your headline.

6

Keep education, skills and languages tight

Your degree and school, a skills list of eight to ten items, and any language you use with employees. A second language is a real advantage for workplaces where many employees speak it. One page is right for coordinators and generalists; two for HR managers with long careers.

Human resources resume summary examples

Choose the summary closest to your level and change the facts. Each gives the population you support, the HR areas you own, proof with a number and the job you want.

HR coordinator or entry level

HR coordinator with two years at a 300-employee credit union, onboarding about 10 new hires a month, keeping personnel files and running reports in ADP. Earned the aPHR in 2025 and completed a bachelor's degree in psychology. Seeking an HR generalist or HR assistant role with more employee relations work.

Experienced HR generalist

HR generalist with seven years supporting 600 employees at a hospital, covering employee relations, leave, benefits and nurse onboarding. Lowered the time to clear new-hire paperwork from 10 days to 4 and closed 55 investigations a year. PHR; seeking an HR business partner role.

HR manager or business partner

HR manager with twelve years, now leading a team of 4 for a 1,400-employee manufacturer with two union plants. Negotiated two labor contracts alongside counsel, cut voluntary turnover by 9 points in two years, and moved the company to Workday. SHRM-SCP; seeking an HR director role.

Human resources resume bullet examples

Each bullet names the HR work, adds a number and says what it changed. Use the pattern with your own facts.

  • Advised 35 supervisors on attendance, discipline and performance issues, reducing grievances filed by 20 percent.
  • Managed about 120 leave of absence cases a year, keeping every case documented and on time.
  • Rolled out a new HR system to 900 employees in 8 weeks, with 94 percent logging in during the first month.
  • Rewrote the 60-page employee handbook in plain language and got sign-off from every manager.
  • Trained 150 managers on harassment prevention and respectful workplace rules in a single quarter.
  • Led a pay review of 320 roles and corrected 18 pay gaps between employees in the same job.
  • Reduced new-hire paperwork errors from 12 percent to 2 percent by moving forms online.
  • Ran exit interviews for 200 departing employees a year and reported the top 3 reasons to leadership each quarter.
  • Coordinated a reduction in force affecting 45 employees, with notices, severance packets and outplacement delivered on schedule.
  • Launched a monthly employee recognition program that raised engagement survey scores from 68 to 76.
  • Answered about 50 employee questions a week on pay, benefits and policy through an HR help inbox.

Certifications for human resources professionals

There is no license for HR work, so certification is how HR professionals show tested knowledge. Two organizations offer the credentials employers ask for most. HR roles also involve federal rules you should be able to talk about, such as Form I-9 employment eligibility verification and the equal employment opportunity rules enforced by the EEOC. As of September 2026:

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) from the Society for Human Resource Management: for HR professionals in day-to-day operations or starting an HR career; no degree or experience is required to sit for it.
  • SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) from SHRM: for senior HR professionals leading strategy, with at least three years in strategic HR or three years holding the SHRM-CP. Both SHRM credentials renew every three years through development credits or by retaking the exam.
  • Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) from HRCI: a knowledge-based credential for people starting in HR or managing people without HR training; no HR experience is required.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) from HRCI: focuses on technical and operational HR and U.S. law. It requires professional-level HR experience: one year with a master's degree, two years with a bachelor's degree, or four years without a degree. It renews with 60 credits every three years or by retesting.
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from HRCI: for senior and strategic HR leaders.

The example, line by line

The example is for Carmen, the only HR generalist at a distribution company, who wants a senior generalist job at a manufacturer. Here is how each part works.

Headline: HR Generalist, SHRM-CP. Level and credential together, in the posting's words.

Summary: six years in HR, then the scale that matters most: the only generalist for 450 employees at three warehouses. The second sentence lists the HR areas she owns and the system she uses. The third gives her certification, her Spanish and the kind of role she wants next.

Certification: the SHRM-CP with the issuing body and 2023, in its own section so it is not missed.

Current job: five bullets that each cover a different part of generalist work. Scope first (450 employees, 3 warehouses). Then employee relations, about 40 complaints a year. Then the headline result: turnover from 58 to 39 percent after a 30-day onboarding plan. Then benefits (380 employees, 97 percent online) and compliance (36 corrected I-9 records).

Earlier job: two coordinator bullets from a medical group, including license tracking for 220 clinical staff, which shows care with records.

Education, skills and languages: an HR degree, eight skills naming tasks and systems, and fluent Spanish, valuable in a plant or warehouse workforce.

Mistakes that hold HR resumes back

  • Writing about loving people. People person and passion for employees say nothing an HR director can check. Show it through turnover, engagement and resolved complaints.
  • No headcount. Without the number of employees and sites, the reader cannot tell whether you ran HR for a small office or a large company.
  • Sharing confidential details. Never describe a specific investigation, employee or settlement in a way that could identify anyone. Give counts and outcomes only.
  • Listing every HR task. A list of 20 duties reads like the job description. Pick the five areas you are strongest in and prove each with a number.
  • Calling recruiting HR, or HR recruiting. If the posting is for a generalist, lead with relations, benefits and compliance; if it is for a recruiter, lead with hiring numbers. Tailor the top half of the page.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a human resources resume?

Your contact details, a headline with your HR title and any certification, a short summary, your certifications, each job with the number of employees you supported and your results, your degree, and HR skills and systems that match the posting.

What is the difference between an HR generalist and a recruiter resume?

An HR generalist resume leads with employee relations, benefits, leave, onboarding, policies and compliance. A recruiter resume leads with hiring: requisitions filled, time to fill, sourcing channels and hiring manager relationships.

Do I need a certification to work in HR?

No, but many generalist and manager postings prefer one. The SHRM-CP and the aPHR need no HR experience to sit for them, so they are open to people early in their HR careers.

Should I get the SHRM-CP or the PHR?

Both are widely recognized. The SHRM-CP has no degree or experience requirement to sit for the exam; the PHR requires professional-level HR experience and focuses on technical HR and U.S. law. Look at which one local postings mention more often.

How do I write an HR resume with no HR experience?

Show HR-adjacent work: training new coworkers, scheduling, handling employee paperwork as an office assistant, or supervising a team. Consider the aPHR or SHRM-CP, and apply for HR assistant or coordinator roles, leading with those tasks and numbers.

How long should an HR resume be?

One page for coordinators and generalists. Two pages for HR managers and directors with many years and several employers, with the summary and current job on page one.

What HR metrics should I include?

Turnover or retention, time to fill if you hire, investigation counts, audit results, benefits enrollment completion, training completion, engagement survey scores and cost savings from benefits or process changes.

How do I describe employee relations work without breaking confidentiality?

Give counts and outcomes, never names or details: for example, investigated and resolved about 40 complaints a year with written findings. That shows scale and care without exposing anyone.

Which HR systems should I list?

The HR information system you use (Workday, ADP, UKG, Paycom, BambooHR), any applicant tracking or benefits platform, E-Verify, and Excel or reporting tools. Name them exactly as the posting does.

What resume template works for HR?

A clean single-column layout with a little warmth. The creative template used in Carmen's example suits people-focused roles while staying easy for hiring software to read.
