Legal Assistant Resume: Examples (2026)

Legal assistant resume example with summaries, bullets, skills, certifications and how it differs from a paralegal, plus official pay and a free template.

Template:

A litigation legal assistant supporting three partners at a small firm, applying for a senior legal assistant job at a larger litigation firm.

Why this resume works

  • The first bullet sets the scale an attorney cares about: 3 partners and about 140 open matters, which tells a larger firm she can handle a heavy desk.
  • Deadlines are treated as the core of the job, with docketing, two reminders and no missed deadlines in 4 years, because a missed court date is the error firms fear most.
  • Her NALS Certified Legal Professional credential is at the top, a credential written for legal support staff, so it matches the job title rather than reaching for a paralegal one.

Law firms use the title legal assistant in two ways. At many firms it means the person who keeps an attorney's practice running: the calendar and court deadlines, filings, letters, document formatting, client calls and billing entries. At others it is simply another name for a paralegal. Read the posting closely. If it talks about docketing, e-filing, correspondence and supporting several attorneys, it is the first kind, and this page is for you. If it asks you to research case law, summarize depositions and draft motions, it is paralegal work, and the paralegal resume example is the better model.

Here you will find what an attorney or office administrator looks for in a legal assistant resume, the order that works, summary and bullet examples for entry-level, experienced and senior legal assistants, the skills and software firms name in postings, the certifications that exist for legal support staff, and a full example for a litigation legal assistant moving to a larger firm.

1

Name your practice area in the headline

Litigation, family law, estate planning, real estate, immigration and corporate practices run very differently. A headline such as Litigation Legal Assistant or Estate Planning Legal Assistant tells the reader which part of the firm you fit. If the firm calls the role legal secretary, use that title on the application for that firm.

2

Show how many attorneys and matters you support

The first question an attorney has is whether you can keep up. Say how many attorneys you work for, their level (partners, associates), and roughly how many open matters or clients they carry. Supporting one solo lawyer and supporting four busy partners are very different jobs.

3

Make deadlines and accuracy the center of your bullets

Calendaring, docketing, e-filing and proofreading are where a legal assistant protects the firm. Write bullets that show volume and reliability: filings per month, courts you file in, deadlines tracked, errors caught before a document went out. Start each bullet with a verb and include a number.

4

List the software by name

Firms want someone who can start without training. Name the practice management system (Clio, PracticePanther, MyCase, Aderant, Elite), the document management system (iManage, NetDocuments), the e-filing systems you use (state court portals, federal CM/ECF), and tools like Adobe Acrobat for Bates numbering and redaction.

5

Add certifications if you have them

No license is needed to work as a legal assistant, but a credential written for legal support staff, such as those from NALS, shows tested knowledge of procedures, ethics and terminology. List it near the top with the year. If you are studying for one, you can say so.

6

Keep education, skills and languages short

An associate degree or certificate in legal office administration or paralegal studies goes under education with the school and year. Then a skills list and any second language, which many firms value for client calls. One page is enough for almost every legal assistant.

These skills appear most often in legal assistant postings. Choose the ones that are true for you, use the posting's wording, and show the most important ones inside your bullets.

Hard skills

  • Calendaring and docketing court deadlines
  • State court and federal CM/ECF e-filing
  • Drafting routine legal correspondence
  • Formatting pleadings, motions and discovery
  • Preparing exhibit binders and trial notebooks
  • Client intake and conflict checks
  • Time entry and billing review
  • File opening, organizing and closing
  • Scheduling depositions, hearings and mediations
  • Transcription and dictation

Soft skills

  • Keeping client information confidential
  • Staying calm on filing deadline days
  • Clear, courteous phone manner with upset clients
  • Anticipating what an attorney needs next
  • Careful proofreading
  • Working for several attorneys without dropping tasks

Tools and software

  • Clio, PracticePanther or MyCase
  • Aderant or Elite for billing at larger firms
  • iManage or NetDocuments
  • Microsoft Word (styles, tables of contents, redlines)
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Court e-filing portals and PACER

Pick the one closest to you and change the facts. Each says the practice area, who you support and how much, your strongest skills, and the job you want.

Entry-level legal assistant

Recent legal office administration graduate with a 160-hour internship at a county prosecutor's office, where I organized case files, scanned discovery and scheduled witness meetings. Type 70 words a minute and know Word, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat. Seeking an entry-level legal assistant or legal secretary position at a litigation or family law firm.

Experienced legal assistant

Legal assistant with six years supporting two estate planning attorneys, preparing about 30 wills and trust packages a month, scheduling signings and handling probate court filings. Organized, discreet and comfortable with clients during difficult family moments. Seeking a legal assistant role at an estate planning or elder law practice.

Senior legal assistant or legal secretary

Senior legal secretary with fourteen years at large firms, currently supporting four partners in a commercial litigation group. Train new assistants, manage trial logistics for cases with up to 900 exhibits, and handle billing in Elite. Seeking a senior legal assistant or legal support supervisor role.

Each bullet names a task, gives a number, and says what it protected or saved. Use the pattern with your own facts.

  • Supported 2 partners and 3 associates in a 20-lawyer real estate practice, handling about 45 closings a month.
  • Tracked more than 300 court dates and statute of limitations deadlines in Clio with zero missed dates.
  • Prepared and e-filed 40 bankruptcy petitions and schedules a month in federal court.
  • Assembled trial binders with 650 exhibits for a two-week jury trial, delivered two days before the deadline.
  • Drafted about 80 routine letters a week to clients, courts and opposing counsel for attorney review.
  • Ran conflict checks and opened files for 35 new matters a month.
  • Transcribed dictation for 3 attorneys with same-day turnaround on 95 percent of tapes.
  • Organized 12,000 pages of client documents into a searchable, Bates-numbered set for production.
  • Cut late time entries by half by sending attorneys a short daily reminder with draft entries.
  • Scheduled 25 depositions a month, booking court reporters, interpreters and conference rooms.
  • Trained 4 new legal assistants on the firm's filing, calendaring and billing procedures.

No license or certification is required to work as a legal assistant. Some firms prefer a credential, and a few pay more for one. The certifications written for legal support staff come from NALS, the association for legal professionals, whose certification manual covers the exams and recertification rules. As of September 2026:

  • Accredited Legal Professional (ALP) from NALS: an entry-level multiple-choice exam on legal office procedures, client service, ethics, legal terms and writing. Valid for five years, renewed with continuing legal education.
  • Certified Legal Professional (CLP) from NALS: a four-part advanced exam for experienced legal assistants and legal support staff, valid for five years and renewed with 75 hours of continuing education, including ethics.
  • Professional Paralegal (PP) from NALS, or the Certified Paralegal (CP) from NALA, the Paralegal Association: worth considering if you are moving into paralegal work.

The example, line by line

The example is for Aisha, a litigation legal assistant at a small firm who wants a senior role at a bigger one. Here is why each part is there.

Headline: Litigation Legal Assistant. It names the practice area, so she is read for litigation desks and not for transactional ones.

Summary: five years, three partners and a 12-lawyer firm in the first sentence; her main duties in the second; her credential, her Arabic and the job she wants in the third.

Certifications: both NALS credentials with years. The ALP from 2021 and the CLP from 2025 show steady growth in the same field.

Current job: five bullets. Scale first (3 partners, about 140 matters), then the deadline record, then volume of work: about 60 filings a month in state court and CM/ECF, and discovery for 25 or more cases. The last bullet shows business sense: unbilled time down 30 percent, which partners notice.

Earlier job: a single line from reception at a family law office, with about 70 calls a day and 20 new files a month in Clio, showing she knows client intake.

Education, skills and languages: her legal office degree, eight skills naming the systems and tasks, and Arabic, a real asset for firms with Arabic-speaking clients.

  • Claiming paralegal work you do not do. If your role is calendaring, filing and correspondence, say so with pride. An attorney who hires you for research you have never done will find out in the first week.
  • No practice area. A firm hiring for estate planning wants to see wills and probate. Name your practice areas in the headline and bullets.
  • Typos. Proofreading is part of the job, so a single spelling mistake on a legal assistant resume costs more than on almost any other.
  • Naming clients or cases. Describe matters by type and size, never by client name or case caption. Confidentiality is part of what you are selling.
  • Generic software lines. Proficient in Microsoft Office says little. Say what you do in Word (tables of authorities, redlines, styles) and name the practice management and e-filing systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a legal assistant and a paralegal?

It depends on the employer. Many firms use legal assistant for administrative support to attorneys (calendars, filings, correspondence, billing) and paralegal for substantive work such as legal research, drafting and case preparation. Some firms use the two titles for the same job, so read each posting's duties.

What should a legal assistant put on a resume?

Contact details, a headline with your practice area, a short summary, any certifications, each job with the number of attorneys and matters you support and your results, your education, and a skills list naming the legal software and e-filing systems you use.

Do legal assistants need a certification?

No. It is optional. A credential such as the NALS Accredited Legal Professional or Certified Legal Professional can help you stand out, especially if you have little experience or are moving to a larger firm.

How do I write a legal assistant resume with no experience?

Lead with any legal coursework, an internship or volunteer work at a legal aid office or courthouse, and office jobs where you handled scheduling, records or confidential information. Give numbers: calls a day, files organized, typing speed.

Is a legal secretary the same as a legal assistant?

Often, yes. Many firms have moved from the title legal secretary to legal assistant for the same support role. Use whichever title the posting uses in your headline.

What software should a legal assistant list?

The practice management system (Clio, PracticePanther, MyCase), billing software at larger firms (Aderant, Elite), document management (iManage, NetDocuments), e-filing systems, and Word and Adobe Acrobat with the features you use.

How long should a legal assistant resume be?

One page. Senior legal secretaries with long careers at several firms may use two, but one tight page is safer.

Should I include my typing speed?

Yes, if it is strong (around 60 words a minute or faster) and the posting mentions typing or transcription. Put it in your summary or skills.

How do I show I can handle confidential information?

Show it through the work: conflict checks, sealed filings, client intake, and the fact that you describe matters without naming clients. Discretion can also go in your summary.

Can a legal assistant move up to paralegal?

Yes, and it is a common path. Take on research or drafting tasks under supervision, consider a paralegal certificate or certification, and then rewrite your resume to lead with that substantive work.
