Project Manager Resume: Examples (2026)

Project manager resume example with a PMP, summaries, bullets that show scope, budget and delivery, key skills, official pay figures and a free template.

Template:

A PMP-certified project manager at a 14-branch credit union applying for a senior project manager role at a regional bank.

Why this resume works

  • The first bullet sets her range: 4 to 6 projects at once, with budgets from $150,000 to $1.8 million.
  • Her biggest project is described the way a bank would judge it: 96,000 members moved to new online banking on the planned date and 3 percent under budget.
  • The PMP sits in its own section and in the summary, because many project manager postings list it as required or preferred.

A project manager is responsible for getting one defined piece of work done: a new system, a product launch, a building fit-out, a process change. You own the plan, the schedule, the budget, the risks and the team for that project, and you answer for whether it lands. The hiring manager reading your resume wants evidence that the projects you ran actually finished, on the date and money agreed, and did what they were meant to do. That makes a project manager resume unusually easy to judge: either your bullets show size, delivery and results, or they do not.

This guide covers how a project manager resume should read, a full example for a PMP-certified project manager at a credit union, summaries at three levels, bullets that show delivery, the skills and tools postings ask for, and how the PMP and other certifications work. Project roles come in three sizes, and it helps to apply at the right one. A project coordinator supports project managers with schedules, notes and tracking. A project manager, the role on this page, owns individual projects from start to finish. A program manager leads several related projects and the project managers running them.

How to write a project manager resume

1

Put your credential and industry in the headline

Project manager postings are sorted by industry and method. A headline like Project Manager, PMP, Banking Technology and Operations tells a recruiter your certification, your field and the kind of project you run. Add PMP after your name only if it is active.

2

Summarize the size of the projects you run

In three or four sentences give your years of experience, the kinds of projects, the largest budget and team size, the methods you use (plan-driven, agile or a mix) and the role you want. Size is the first thing a hiring manager checks against their own projects.

3

Lead each job with scope, then your biggest delivery

Your first bullet should say how many projects you run at once and their budget range. The second should be your best project told as an outcome: what it was, who it affected, whether it hit its date and budget, and what changed afterward.

4

Show how you manage, not only what you delivered

Add bullets for the parts of the job that make delivery possible: risk and issue logs, change control, status reporting to executives, vendor contracts, and the people you coach. These show a hiring manager how you would run their projects.

5

Name your methods and tools the way postings do

List planning and tracking tools by name (Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, Jira, Asana), and methods such as Scrum or Kanban only if you have used them on real projects. Match the posting's words where they are true for you, because many employers search applications for them.

6

Place certifications after experience and keep it tight

Put PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP or a Scrum certificate in their own section with the issuer and year. Then your education. One page works up to about ten years; two pages are fine for senior project managers with many large projects.

Project manager resume summary examples

Choose the level closest to yours and replace the details. Each summary gives the size of your projects, how you run them and the role you want.

New project manager

Project coordinator with three years at a commercial construction firm, now running small tenant improvement projects on my own with budgets up to $400,000. Build schedules in Microsoft Project, manage subcontractor submittals and run weekly owner meetings. CAPM certified; seeking a first project manager role.

Experienced project manager

PMP-certified project manager with seven years delivering software implementation projects for hospital clients. Lead 3 to 5 projects at a time with teams of up to 25, and delivered 19 of my last 21 projects on schedule. Seeking a project manager role in healthcare technology.

Project manager resume bullet examples

Each bullet shows a project's size, how it was managed, or what it delivered. Use the pattern with your own numbers.

  • Managed a $2.3 million data center move for 140 servers over 3 weekends with 2 hours of total planned downtime.
  • Delivered a new customer portal 2 weeks early by splitting the work into 6 releases and launching the most-used features first.
  • Recovered a late payroll system project by re-planning 60 tasks and adding a second test cycle; it launched 5 weeks after the original date instead of 4 months.
  • Lead weekly status meetings for 12 team members from 4 departments and 2 vendors.
  • Kept 11 of 12 projects in 2025 within 5 percent of approved budget.
  • Negotiated a fixed-price contract with an implementation partner, capping vendor costs at $480,000.
  • Ran a Scrum team of 8 through 26 two-week sprints to deliver a claims intake app.
  • Set up a change control board that cut unplanned scope changes from 30 to 8 per project.
  • Planned the fit-out of a 3-floor office for 220 staff, finishing 4 days ahead of move-in.
  • Wrote the company's first project closeout template, now used on 40+ projects a year.
  • Trained 15 managers on writing project charters and status reports.

Certifications for project managers

No license is required to work as a project manager, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education. Many postings still ask for a certification, most often the PMP. These are the certifications project managers list most, each from the body that issues it:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute: the certification most often named in postings. As of September 2026 you need 35 hours of project management training plus three years of experience managing projects with a bachelor's degree, four with an associate degree, or five with a high school diploma, and you keep it with 60 professional development units every three years.
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from the Project Management Institute: the entry-level option, with no experience needed. As of September 2026 it asks for a high school diploma and 23 hours of project management education.
  • PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) from the Project Management Institute: for project managers who run agile teams.
  • Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance: a 16-hour course followed by a 50-question test, common in software and digital projects.

The example, line by line

The example is Nadia's. She has five years as a project manager at a credit union and wants a senior project manager job at a bank. Here is what each part does.

Headline: Project Manager, PMP, Banking Technology and Operations. The credential, the industry and the project type, all in the words a bank's posting would use.

Summary: years as a project manager and as a business analyst, then the size of her work (budgets up to $1.8 million, teams of 6 to 20 across four groups) and her comfort with both delivery styles. The last line names the job.

Experience: the first bullet gives her range, 4 to 6 projects at a time. The second is her best delivery: 96,000 members, on the planned date, 3 percent under budget. The third is a second delivery with a result, 14 branches in 7 months and 35 minutes saved per branch each day. The last two show how she manages: a weekly report to 5 vice presidents, and coaching 3 business analysts and a coordinator. Her business analyst job keeps one line (9 releases, 2 vendor teams) to show where her requirements skills come from.

Certifications, skills and education: PMP from 2024 and CSM from 2023 come right after experience, then eight skills with the tools named, then her degree.

Project manager resume mistakes

  • Listing projects without outcomes. "Managed CRM implementation" leaves out the only part that matters: did it launch on time and on budget, and what changed?
  • No size. A $50,000 project and a $5 million project need different managers. Give budgets, team sizes and the number of people or sites affected.
  • Claiming every project was perfect. Experienced readers know projects slip. One bullet on a project you recovered is often more convincing than ten that went smoothly.
  • Methodology word salad. Listing Agile, Waterfall, Scrum, Kanban, Lean and PRINCE2 together without examples reads as keyword stuffing. Name the ones you have used and show one in a bullet.
  • Writing "PMP" when it has lapsed. Employers can check the PMI certification registry. List only active certifications, or write that you are renewing.
  • Applying at the wrong level. If you mostly track schedules and take notes for someone else's project, you may be a strong coordinator rather than a project manager. Aim your headline at the job your bullets can prove.

Frequently asked questions

What should a project manager resume include?

A headline with your credential and industry, a summary of project size and methods, each job with scope, delivery results and how you managed, the tools you use, certifications such as PMP with the year, and your education.

How do I show project results on my resume?

Give each major project its size (budget, team, users or sites), whether it hit its date and budget, and what changed afterward, such as time saved, cost cut or customers served. Use percentages if exact figures are confidential.

Do I need a PMP to get a project manager job?

Not always. Many postings list it as preferred rather than required, and experience often counts more. In government contracting, consulting and large companies it is asked for more often, so check the postings in your field.

What skills should a project manager list?

Planning and scheduling, budgeting, risk and issue management, change control, stakeholder reporting, vendor management and agile methods if you use them, plus tools like Microsoft Project, Smartsheet or Jira. Show leadership and communication through your bullets.

How do I become a project manager with no project manager title?

Most project managers started in another role. Pull out the projects you already led in that job, with their size and results, and aim your headline at project management. A CAPM or a project coordinator role are common steps in.

What is the difference between a project manager and a program manager?

A project manager runs one project, or several separate ones, from plan to handover. A program manager oversees a group of related projects that together serve one business goal, and usually leads the project managers running them.

How long should a project manager resume be?

One page for early career, two pages for experienced project managers. Do not list every project; pick the biggest and most relevant, and summarize the rest in one line.

Should I list projects separately from jobs?

Usually no. Put projects inside the job where you did them. A separate projects section helps only if you are changing careers or did freelance or volunteer projects that matter for the role.

What is a good summary for a project manager resume?

Three or four sentences with your years of experience, the type and size of projects you run, your methods and certification, and the role you want. At least one number, such as your largest budget, makes it believable.

How do I show agile experience on a project manager resume?

Give the team size, the length of your sprints or release cycle, what the team delivered and your role in ceremonies such as planning and reviews. Add a Scrum or PMI-ACP certification if you hold one.
