Template:

A certified clinical medical assistant with three years in family medicine applying for a medical assistant job in a cardiology practice.

Why this resume works

 • Both of her NHA credentials are near the top, and the EKG certification is the one a cardiology practice will look for first.
 • Her bullets split clinical and office work with numbers for each: 28 to 32 patients roomed a day, about 15 EKGs a week, and 92 percent of prior authorizations approved on the first try.
 • The receptionist job stays because it shows she can check in patients, verify insurance and cover the desk, which small specialty practices need.

Medical assistants keep a clinic moving. On a normal day you might room thirty patients, give injections, run an EKG, call in a prior authorization and cover the front desk at lunch. A practice manager reading your resume wants to see that range, plus the one or two things the practice needs most: strong clinical skills for a specialty office, or scheduling and insurance know-how for a busy front desk. Your certification, and which body issued it, is usually the first screening question.

This guide has a full example for a family medicine assistant moving to cardiology, six steps for writing your own, summaries for new, experienced and lead MAs, bullet examples with real numbers, and the national certifications employers ask for, with links to each certifying body. If you draw blood all day, the phlebotomist resume example may be the closer fit.

How to write a medical assistant resume

1

Use a headline that says clinical, front office or both

Right under your name, write your credential and the side of the job you do most, for example Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Family Medicine or Medical Assistant, Clinical and Front Office. Practices hire for one or the other more often than you would think, and the headline tells them which you are.

2

List your certification with the body that issued it

CMA, RMA and CCMA come from three different organizations, and some employers accept only certain ones. Write the full name, the abbreviation, the issuer and the year. Add EKG, phlebotomy or BLS certifications on the lines below.

3

Write a summary with volume and specialty

Say how long you have been an MA, the type of practice and how many providers you support, and how many patients you room a day. Name three or four skills, your certifications, and the kind of practice you want to join next.

4

Give clinical and office work their own numbers

Clinical bullets: patients roomed, injections, EKGs, blood draws, point-of-care tests. Office bullets: patients checked in, prior authorizations, referrals, calls handled. Where you can, add a result such as shorter wait times, fewer denied claims or better screening rates.

5

Match the practice's systems and specialty

Name the EHR you use (Epic, athenaOne, eClinicalWorks, NextGen) and any specialty tasks the posting mentions, such as Holter monitor setup for cardiology, suture removal for dermatology or growth charts for pediatrics. If you have done it, say so in the posting's words.

6

Add your training program and keep it to one page

Give your medical assisting program, school, year and externship. Older non-medical jobs can go, unless they show customer service you will use at the front desk. One page is right for nearly every MA resume.

Medical assistant resume bullet examples

Borrow the structure of these bullets: an action, a number, and a result where you have one.

 • Room 35+ patients a day for a pediatric practice, including growth measurements, vision and hearing screens and vaccine histories.
 • Draw blood from 20 to 25 patients a day in an in-house lab, with a recollection rate under 2 percent.
 • Set up and break down 10 to 12 procedure rooms a day for skin biopsies and excisions in a dermatology office.
 • Fit and schedule 8 Holter and event monitors a week for a cardiology group, logging each device's return.
 • Answer and route 120+ patient calls a day, sending clinical questions to nurses within 30 minutes.
 • Cut prior authorization denials from 18 to 7 percent by checking payer rules before each request.
 • Raised annual wellness visit bookings by 22 percent by calling overdue Medicare patients from a monthly list.
 • Trained 6 new MAs on vaccine storage, temperature logs and the practice's rooming standards.
 • Performed 30+ point-of-care tests a day, including strep, flu, COVID-19 and urine drug screens.
 • Kept vaccine refrigerator logs twice a day for 3 years with no lost doses from temperature problems.
 • Scanned and indexed 200+ outside records a week into the EHR so providers had results before each visit.

Certifications for medical assistants

Medical assistants usually earn a national certification from one of several organizations, each with its own exam and eligibility rules. Which duties an MA may perform is set by state law, and a few states add their own credential: in Washington, for example, medical assistants who do clinical work need a credential from the state Department of Health. Check your state's rules, then list the certifications you hold:

 • CMA (AAMA), Certified Medical Assistant from the American Association of Medical Assistants: the main route is graduating from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. The credential is recertified every 60 months.
 • RMA (AMT), Registered Medical Assistant from American Medical Technologists: routes include a recent accredited program with an externship, several years of work experience, military training, or teaching.
 • CCMA, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from the National Healthcareer Association: requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus a training program or supervised work experience in the field.
 • Add-on certifications that help in specialty practices: Certified EKG Technician (CET) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) from the NHA, and BLS from the American Heart Association.

The example, line by line

This is Keisha's resume. She has three years in a family medicine practice and wants to work for a cardiology group. Here is how each part supports that.

Headline: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Family Medicine. It names her credential and her current specialty in one line.

Summary: 3 years, a 6-provider practice and 28 to 32 patients a day in the opening sentence. EKGs are named early among her skills, and the last sentence says cardiology outright.

Certifications: CCMA from 2023, CET from 2024, and BLS, each with the issuing organization. The CET is the bridge to cardiology.

Experience: five bullets that cover rooming, about 15 EKGs a week, 40+ injections a week, a process result (rooming time down from 11 to 7 minutes with 4 other MAs) and 25 to 30 prior authorizations a week at 92 percent first-pass approval. Her receptionist job keeps one bullet: 60+ check-ins a day for 6 providers.

Education and skills: her diploma with the 160-hour externship, then eight skills, several of them cardiology-relevant, in the words postings use.

Common medical assistant resume mistakes

 • Writing CMA when you hold a different credential. CMA (AAMA), RMA and CCMA are separate credentials from separate bodies. Use the exact name of the one you earned; employers verify it.
 • Only clinical, or only office, when the job is both. Many postings want someone who can room patients and cover the desk. If you do both, show both with numbers.
 • No patient volume. Rooming 15 patients a day and rooming 35 are different jobs. Put the number in your first bullet.
 • Skipping the EHR. Practices want to know you will not need weeks of system training. Name the system you use.
 • Listing tasks your state does not allow MAs to do. Duties differ by state. If you trained in one state and moved, describe only what you were allowed to do and did.

Frequently asked questions

What should a medical assistant put on a resume?

A headline with your credential, a short summary, your certifications with the issuing body, each job with patients per day and both clinical and office tasks, your training program and externship, and skills including your EHR.

What is the difference between CMA, RMA and CCMA?

They are national certifications from three different organizations: CMA from the American Association of Medical Assistants, RMA from American Medical Technologists and CCMA from the National Healthcareer Association. Eligibility rules differ, so check which one your program prepares you for and which your employer accepts.

How do I write a medical assistant resume with no experience?

Lead with your certification or exam date, then describe your externship like a job: the clinic type, the hours, patients roomed per day and skills used. Add customer service jobs to show you can handle a front desk.

Do medical assistants need a license?

It depends on the state. What medical assistants may do is set by state law, and some states issue their own credential, such as Washington's medical assistant credentials from the state Department of Health. Check your state's rules before you apply.

What skills should I list on a medical assistant resume?

Rooming and vital signs, injections, EKGs, blood draws, point-of-care testing, scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorizations and your EHR. Add soft skills like clear communication through your bullets.

Should I include my externship on my resume?

Yes, especially in your first year or two. List the site, the specialty, the hours and what you did. Once you have steady MA experience, shorten it to one line in your education section.

How long should a medical assistant resume be?

One page. If you have many years across several specialties, keep the most recent and relevant jobs detailed and shorten the rest.

Should I put front desk experience on a clinical MA resume?

Yes, in a line or two. Check-in, scheduling and insurance work make you useful when the office is short-staffed, and small practices value that.

How do I show I can work in a specialty practice?

Name specialty tasks you have done, such as EKGs and Holter monitors for cardiology or biopsy setup for dermatology, and add related certifications, like an EKG credential.

What should my headline say?

Your credential and focus, such as Registered Medical Assistant, Pediatrics or Medical Assistant, Clinical and Front Office. It should match the job title in the posting as closely as it honestly can.
